Histoire
Handicap International is an association founded in France in 1982. It is an independent international solidarity organisation. Created by young French doctors to help thousands of people amputated by anti-personnel mines, equip them so they can walk again. These people are in refugee camps between the Thai and Cambodian border. They are then the only ones to do so, and there is no other humanitarian aid. They will do everything possible to meet the orthopedic needs of these populations in emergency situations.
Also in 1982, they tested an innovative approach for an appropriate technology that is simple and inexpensive. All this by training people on the spot. They will develop prosthetics in bamboo, leather, wood and tires, but also wooden wheelchairs.
In 1992, Handicap International took action against demining, and launched its first demining activities in Cambodia.
In 1993, it was the creation of the Christmas tree bag that we all know. It is used to decorate the foot of the tree and to protect the soil from needles. Once the festivities are over, the bag allows you to cleanly pack the Christmas tree to be thrown away. It is 100% biodegradable and compostable. It is conditioned in ESAT (Establishment and Service d’Aide par le Travail), which thus makes it possible to promote social and professional integration.
In 1999, the Plio Kit was created. Nowadays, it’s called “Book Protector Kit.” This kit includes 10 ready-to-use book protectors. It is also packaged in ESAT (Establishment and Service d’Aide par le Travail) like the Christmas tree bag.
Also in 1999, the association implements simultaneous equipment, mine clearance, risk education and victim assistance activities. These different activities are conducted by teams with complementary technical skills and qualifications.
In 2005, during the earthquake in Pakistan, the association tested temporary emergency prostheses on a very large scale. Many people end up with amputations. They do everything possible to equip these people in an emergency.
In 2016, they conducted a pilot study with several partners on the production of prostheses and orthotics designed with 3D technology. It is thanks to this study that they successfully make the first prostheses in Togo and Madagascar.
In 2019, the association is testing 3D technology again, but this time with refugees in Uganda. They are testing the digital fabrication that will make it possible to provide customized orthotics in 3 refugee camps. Their aim is to create, in the long term, digital manufacturing centres for refugees in East Africa.
Also in 2019, Handicap International and its partner Mobility Robotics will unveil a new solution that will allow the location of mines underground using drones equipped with infrared cameras.
Their actions continue to progress. They are always on the lookout for new developments to help all populations in need.

In 2011, she received the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Award for her work with people with disabilities.
Why donate ?
Why is making a donation to Handicap International so important?
Already because thanks to your money children will be able to walk and play again, adults will be able to work again and thus support their families, to give them joy of life. We can help them even remotely.
For 10 euros per month, it is possible to allow 3 children to receive a prosthesis each year.
And by making a donation of 100 euros, we can allow a child to receive a wheelchair.
You can donate at once or from time to time, or you can make a regular donation.
A regular donation may allow them to better predict mission budgets, but it may also allow them to know in advance what they will be able to do depending on the country and mission and the cost involved. Regular donations can also be used to treat people in need of long-term treatment such as rehabilitation.
When you make a donation, the money is withdrawn from your account as much as you want and as often as you want. The amount and frequency can be changed at any time.
Advantages of making a Donation
Donations are tax-deductible. So if, for example, we decide to donate 10 euros per month, we’re actually giving 2.5 euros per month because 75% of our donations are deductible from our income taxes.
